Wichels, Ernest
[852]
[WICHELS-1964-852]
It is difficult for most of us, living in the year 1964, to realize the advantages we possess over those available to Vallejo residents or Mare Island personnel just a hundred years ago. We take our freeways, radio and TV, dial telephones with direct connections to New York or Hawaii, automobiles, airplanes, etc., for granted.

Ranch Towns In Two Areas
/
Wichels, Ernest
[854]
[WICHELS-1964-854]
Most people think of Vallejo strictly a shipyard city. Many find it difficult to believe that once it qualified as a "ranch town." Ranchowners, the hundreds of employes in dairy operations, cattle and sheep raising, and grain and hay harvests, formed a vital segment of Vallejo's economy in early days.

/
Wichels, Ernest
[846]
[WICHELS-1964-846]
In the days before automobiles, movies, TV or radio, many Vallejoans turned to their churches for Christmas Eve fellowship and entertainment. We chose 1878, at random, and here is what the weekly Chronicle of 86 years ago said, on Dec. 28:

Early Solano
/
Wichels, Ernest
[784]
[WICHELS-1964-784]
A common human weakness is to predict the future. Sometimes the vision we see in the crystal ball may, by coincidence, come true. The editor of the Vallejo Recorder, in July and August of 1867, published a series of articles on Solano County communities and speculated on their development.

Rotary dial phone connections took a toll
/
Bowen, Jerry
[91]
[WAYITWAS-2001-91]
It took a lot of work and coordination to complete a phone call just 50 or so years ago. Gone are those halcyon days when a friendly human voice would assist connecting you to someone by way of a toll call.

Historical Sites Marked
/
Wichels, Ernest
[811]
[WICHELS-1964-811]
Our readers, like all Solano and Napa County residents, are inveterate motorists. One can meet drivers of local automobiles on any given day in almost any spot in California. Along with the highway safety signs, directional signs, etc., one does not travel far without seeing this one: "Historical Marker, 500 Feet."

Wichels, Ernest
[806]
[WICHELS-1964-806]
The Solano County Fair is here and the horses are running! This is a young Fair but many Solano and Napa residents may have the impression that racing is "new" to these counties. Have you ever heard of Vallejo's Hollywood Track, or Vallejo's Cyclodrome, or Napa's Race Track?
