Old Time News Writing
/
Wichels, Ernest
[775]
[WICHELS-1963-775]
Like women's fashions, automobile bodies and hair-dos, the style of reporting news also changes with the years. In our research the past few weeks, poring over the century-old editions of our Vallejo newspapers, we have gleaned some amusing stories. The most interesting aspect is that the city editor, in the olden days, always editorialized in his reporting. Today no city desk would dare to do so.

Delaplane, Kristin
[283]
[ECHOS-1996-283]
(Part one of three) The first newspaper to appear out of Benicia was the California Gazetter in 1851. It was followed by the Benicia Vedette. McGeorge and Cellers were the publishers of the Solano County Herald which debuted Nov. 5, 1855 and was published in Benicia [...]

Ranch Towns In Two Areas
/
Wichels, Ernest
[854]
[WICHELS-1964-854]
Most people think of Vallejo strictly a shipyard city. Many find it difficult to believe that once it qualified as a "ranch town." Ranchowners, the hundreds of employes in dairy operations, cattle and sheep raising, and grain and hay harvests, formed a vital segment of Vallejo's economy in early days.

Dingler, Nancy
[456]
[RETROSPECT-2000-456]
It was a typical hot summer in the year 1909, when a conflagration of massive proportions began early Tuesday morning on July 13, behind the Munroe's Fairfield drugstore.

Town flourished, then faded on the river of time
/
Bowen, Jerry
[580]
[WAYITWAS-2005-580]
In my last column, we saw that the settlement of the Montezuma Hills was a long and troubled process. One of the more interesting claims made for a grant of land was the infamous "Luco Claim."
