Christmas customs of the past
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[768]
[WAYITWAS-2007-768]
There are few recordings of how early Solano County settlers prepared for or celebrated the Christmas season. Customs surely varied widely based on each family's immigration background. Taking a day off from work and having the means to create a well-cooked meal likely were the highlights for early pioneers.

Remembering some Christmas pasts
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[50]
[WAYITWAS-2000-50]
Christmas is fast approaching with its wonderful traditions and not so wonderful "still-have-to-do" moments. Records of earlier celebrations allow us a glimpse of some of the same traditions but also of a slower, seemingly more peaceful season.

Christmas trees become tradition in 1800s
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[266]
[ECHOS-1995-266]
Information for this article came from the Solano County archives. Last in a series By 1877, there were beginning to be a number of family Christmas trees, and it was also noted that it was becoming a custom to have a public Christmas tree. Apparently the public tree was not located in a church, but in another building or hall. It was felt by some that this "public tree" made an ostentatious display of the holiday, at the same time recognizing that it did give the children a great deal of joy.

New Year Eve Past Century
/
Wichels, Ernest
[847]
[WICHELS-1964-847]
We discover what our forefathers did during the New Year season by reading Farragut's log books, and looking over the early editions of the Vallejo Chronicle. How did the weather behave here 100 years ago today?

Solano Christmas holidays festive in 1800s
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[265]
[ECHOS-1995-265]
First of a series Last-minute shopping was the order of the day back in 1863. The first newspaper ad for the season did not appear until the second week of December. And then there was only one ad for toys in the Solano Republican. The ad read: "Toys! Toys! Just received a beautiful assortment of toys for the holidays."

Could schools of the past teach us something?
/
Bowen, Jerry
[766]
[WAYITWAS-2007-766]
This is the last in a series on the early rules of grammar school education. The subjects discussed were penmanship, bookkeeping and current events, as taken from the 1911 Solano County Course of Study. I'm not so sure that they are still pursued in depth in many of the schools of today to any degree.

Thomas Wilson led a varied life
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[211]
[WAYITWAS-2004-211]
My last column covered Luzena's last years and Correnah's life. This column will talk about the oldest son, Thomas. The information once again is based on Luzena's memoirs and the research by Fern Henry in her new book "My Checkered Life: Luzena Stanley Wilson in Early California."

Graduates Of Early Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[805]
[WICHELS-1964-805]
Today, a high school education is basic. It is considered the very minimum training to face life's problems and challenges. This past week 540 young men and women were graduated from the Vallejo Senior High School; 348 from Hogan Senior High; a total of 888 for what is undoubtedly a record graduation for our city.
