Railroad fire changed face of Suisun in 1906
/
Bowen, Jerry
[601]
[WAYITWAS-2005-601]
With all the disasters flooding the news, I might as well add one more, although it's nowhere near on the scale of Hurricane Katrina. It happened in 1906. No, this story isn't about the San Francisco earthquake on April 18, 1906. That was already old news, at least for the local folks.

Old Time News Writing
/
Wichels, Ernest
[775]
[WICHELS-1963-775]
Like women's fashions, automobile bodies and hair-dos, the style of reporting news also changes with the years. In our research the past few weeks, poring over the century-old editions of our Vallejo newspapers, we have gleaned some amusing stories. The most interesting aspect is that the city editor, in the olden days, always editorialized in his reporting. Today no city desk would dare to do so.

In 1873, Dr. G.H. Evans was located in Dixon on the east side of Main Street. An Odd Fellows association was being formed at Vaca Station (Elmira). The Rio Vista Fire Department purchased a bell from one of the Sacramento engine companies.

/
Bowen, Jerry
[587]
[WAYITWAS-2005-587]
I've always found it interesting to read the tattered newspapers of old and compare the items printed then to today's news.

Travel was not easy in the 1850s
/
Bowen, Jerry
[39]
[WAYITWAS-2000-39]
There has been a lot in the news lately about frustrating airport delays and gridlock on the nation's highways. Our lives have become so fast-paced even short travel interruptions are quite frustrating.

Then, And Nowadays
/
Wichels, Ernest
[857]
[WICHELS-1964-857]
When one is interested in the earlier years of Vallejo and Solano County, it seems that every issue of the current Times-Herald or Evening News-Chronicle contains at least a dozen stories that lead directly to similar events some 50 to 100 years ago.

Civil War becomes center of Solano life
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[318]
[ECHOS-1996-318]
The Civil War was the source of much local news in 1863. Pearon's traveling exhibition, "Mirror of the War," was up for three days in Suisun and allowed citizens to see and hear accounts of the war. Local militia groups were formed in the event they were needed for the war effort. It was announced that the Vallejo Rifle Co [...]

Information for this article came from the Benicia Camel Barn Museum, Solano County Genealogical Society, Benicia Historical Society, and Vacaville Heritage Council (Part 2. Last week was the story of the founding of Benicia in 1848 by Robert Semple, who purchased the land from Gen. Vallejo. The first news of the Gold Rush was in Benicia [...]

Travelers bugged by strange bedfellows Lodgings harbored pesky critters and sleepless nights
/
Bowen, Jerry
[660]
[WAYITWAS-2006-660]
I was watching the news today regarding the infestation of bedbugs and about fleas carrying West Nile virus. The media went on and on about people traveling all over the world and the result is that diseases and bugs of all kinds are being spread over areas once free from such things.
