Contra Costa, meaning the "opposite coast," is no longer a stranger. The water barriers have gradually broken down. About Dec. 28, 1885, a ferry carried the first train across Carquinez Strait [...]

County grows and ruffians rile children / Delaplane, Kristin [371] [ECHOS-1998-371]
The county asked for a Suscol and Vallejo road to connect Vallejo with the steam ferry to a point on the Contra Costa shore opposite Mare Island. From there travelers would take a wagon road to Alameda County. This would mean the traveling public would have an accessible and continuous highway from Napa to San Francisco that could be traveled in as short as four hours.

Before it was Grizzly Island, was it 'Grisly'? / Delaplane, Kristin [291] [ECHOS-1996-291]
Some old timers would say Grizzly Island was named from the days when the grizzlies called the island home. That the bears from Mount Diablo came to feed on the island's wild hips and blackberries. Supposedly in those days they were said to be able to cross at a point where the lands of Contra Costa and Solano very nearly met and where the water was quite shallow.

Sunday Law sets aside time for church / Delaplane, Kristin [307] [ECHOS-1996-307]
In the spring of 1858, a new stage line was being established to run between Marysville and Vallejo or Benicia by way of Smith's Ferry, Cacheville, McMahon Ranch and Vacaville. This route was nearly identical to that of the proposed railroad. That it was to operate within nine miles of Napa City meant it would be not only accommodate passengers to and from upper Solano County, but also Napa Springs.
