Vallejo and Mare Island share many August anniversaries. Not the least of these concern Admiral Farragut and his family. More about them later. Let's quickly review some of the other highlights-a few of these the present generation w ill remember; others were familiar to our great-grandfathers.

[WICHELS-1964-781]
Like Santa Claus, the editor of an historical column has many helpers. Hardly a day passes that I do not receive some information which helps to bridge the gap between the past and the present.

Many things have occurred in Vallejo's 114 years of existence. Every day must be an anniversary of some event in our community life. One way to dip into the pages of the past is to recall earlier happenings in the merry month of May.

Wichels, Ernest
[778]
[WICHELS-1963-778]
We've reviewed the New Year's Eve celebrations of earlier generations of Vallejoans. A half century and more ago there was one program which was inevitable. This was the formal grand ball attended by all of the officials and leaders in the community, usually followed by a generous meal sometime around midnight.

History Repeats
/
Wichels, Ernest
[860]
[WICHELS-1964-860]
Anniversaries do have a habit of repeating themselves. Last Tuesday's Chronicle featured an illustrated story of the demolition of the slip of the Mare Island Ferry Co. at the foot of Georgia Street. Since the days of Farragut (1854) this area has been the departure point of passengers bound for the naval shipyard.

February Anniversaries
/
Wichels, Ernest
[787]
[WICHELS-1964-787]
Every day Is an anniversary of some person, some discovery or other event. These have varying degrees of importance. February reminds us of anniversaries because we celebrate the birthdates of Washington and Lincoln. But we are tempted this week to recall other February anniversaries which should interest many Vallejoans and Mare Island folk.

Admiral Farragut: a stellar military career
/
Dingler, Nancy
[468]
[RETROSPECT-2001-468]
The name Farragut can certainly ring a bell; he was the oft-quoted person in history class who said, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead." But, what connection does this larger-than-life figure from history have to do with Solano County? Admiral Farragut is the founder and was the commandant of the Mare Island Navy Yard.

Solano's 49ers
/
Wichels, Ernest
[840]
[WICHELS-1965-840]
It isn't easy to find a real "native son" these days. In fact, "native sons" are California's minority group in this day of expanding population - with 20,000 new residents crossing our state boundaries every month. Yet, it is surprising how many of our Vallejo and Solano County residents are direct descendants of the hardy pioneers who came to California - by overland trial or via the Isthmus of Panama, in 1849 or earlier.
