[WICHELS-1964-781]
Like Santa Claus, the editor of an historical column has many helpers. Hardly a day passes that I do not receive some information which helps to bridge the gap between the past and the present.

Vallejo's Cow Palace

Wichels, Ernest
[793]
[WICHELS-1964-793]
For upwards of a half-century Vallejo had its own version of San Francisco's Cow Palace. Perhaps the present Vallejo generation marvels at the variety of activities which the Cow Palace holds under its roof--rodeos, ice hockey, presidential conventions, religious revivals, dog shows, prize fights, etc.

Solano's 49ers
/
Wichels, Ernest
[840]
[WICHELS-1965-840]
It isn't easy to find a real "native son" these days. In fact, "native sons" are California's minority group in this day of expanding population - with 20,000 new residents crossing our state boundaries every month. Yet, it is surprising how many of our Vallejo and Solano County residents are direct descendants of the hardy pioneers who came to California - by overland trial or via the Isthmus of Panama, in 1849 or earlier.

Dingler, Nancy

[RETROSPECT-2003-479]
Without a doubt, the single most influential person in California history was Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. Mariano was one of those rare individuals, in that he was born and educated in California. Mariano rose to great heights of power and wealth, only to lose it when his dream of being part of the democratic America came true.
