While the celebration of May Day goes back to pagan times, it was celebrated in Solano County well into the 20th century. Each spring, residents anticipated gathering outdoors to enjoy the fresh young greenery, renew friendships after a long winter, dance around the maypole and feast on a lavish picnic.

Extravaganza in 1914 dedicated courthouse

Solano County celebrated the dedication of its courthouse in 1914 with a grand party. Although the courthouse itself had been finished in 1911, it took until the July 4th weekend of 1914 for the community to gather and enjoy a fun-filled, two-day event.

Hotels flourished during Gold Rush period

One of the county's first hotels was owned by Capt. Edward von Pfister, who had purchased a whole line of goods for a general store in Hawaii. In 1846, he moved to Benicia and set up a general store in a 40-by-25-foot adobe. His store became a gathering place by day and bar/hotel at night, the store's floor providing the sleeping quarters.

In the days when the Indians lived on this land of Solano County, they lived as gathers and traders. Their trade routes were well-established, allowing for trading between the coastal Indians and the inland groups. The routes the Indians traveled in part resemble some of the roadways that exist today.
