Captain steered profitable course
/
Bowen, Jerry
[713]
[WAYITWAS-2007-713]
The city of San Francisco frequently has been associated with disasters and abnormal behavior - in my opinion, anyway. And so it was with a ship named San Francisco.

Produce crops proved profitable for Solanoans
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[12]
[WAYITWAS-2000-12]
Once the early pioneer settlers had cleared their land and built their homes, the search for marketable produce began. During the first years, this included hunting for wild game and harvesting the abundant grasses for hay. Both commodities could be sold profitably to the markets in San Francisco and Sacramento.

Captain Waterman sailed ahead

Bowen, Jerry
[167]
[WAYITWAS-2003-167]
Fairfield is celebrating a yearlong centennial in observance of the city's incorporation in 1903. I thought a series of articles on Captain "Bully" Waterman, Fairfield's founder, would be appropriate and would bring to light what appears to be some questionable history linked to him.

[735]
[WAYITWAS-2007-735]
In my last column we took a sneak preview of what it was like for school students back in 1909. I thought you might find it quite interesting how much of an education you had to have just to enter high school. In 1911, the Solano County Schools Board of Education issued a book of "Rules for Promotion and Graduation" and a "List of Supplementary Reading Books."

Solano has seen many changes
/
Dingler, Nancy
[492]
[RETROSPECT-2004-492]
The 1850s brought a major change to Suisun and the surrounding area that would alter the landscape forever. Ship captain, Josiah Wing purchased the "island" of Suisun from Curtis Wilson and Dr. John Baker in 1852, built a wharf and a warehouse, then had his house in San Francisco shipped up the slough and his family sent for. In partnership with John Owens, Captain Wing laid out the town of Suisun. They soon discovered that at low tide, Suisun was not an island, but connected to Fairfield by a strip of land, eventually named Union Ave.
