At the beginning of the 20th century, women all over the country founded women's service clubs to improve their communities. In upper Solano County, the three most prominent clubs were the Dixon Women's Improvement Club, Vacaville's Saturday Club, and Suisun/Fairfield's Wednesday Club.

In 1886, Henry Goosen opened a blacksmith shop and general hardware store in Cordelia. He had a strong background in well drilling, pumps, steam machinery and related areas. As such, he had become interested in the Fairfield Water Works, located on Empire Street behind the Courthouse. Population takes off with a new air base / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [719] [WAYITWAS-2007-719]
Well into the 20th century, Vacaville, Fairfield, and Suisun remained small communities with slow-growing populations. By 1940, Fairfield had 1,312 residents. That growth pattern changed suddenly when construction of the Fairfield-Suisun Army Airfield began in 1942. Hundreds of workers flooded into the community to construct the new base - and every one of them needed a place to stay.

AND AWAY WE GROW- Years ago, in fact in 1910, when Vacaville residents traveled to San Francisco using old Highway 40, they needed to be alert in passing through Fairfield else they would have missed the few buildings there marking that hamlet. The population of Fairfield in 1910 was 834, and although Vacaville at that time was no booming metropolis, it claimed a population of 1177. Many Vacaville resident, seeking merchandise and services in those days gone by, would travel to nearby Suisun, which had more to offer than did Vacaville or Fairfield. But, look what's happened since those days.

Solano County will celebrate the official opening its new Government Center in downtown Fairfield on Dec. 16. The new glass and steel building now dominates the face of downtown Fairfield. Yet before its advent, there were four different buildings that served as Solano County's government center.

Group focused on enriching women's lives / Bowen, Jerry [539] [WAYITWAS-2004-539]
Over the years, women's social clubs in Solano County have been in the forefront of many civic improvements to their respective communities. One of the oldest is the Wednesday Club of Suisun that was founded in 1911.

By the turn of the last century, Vacaville had developed into a small town with a lively society. In an age without radio, television, movie theaters or other forms of amusement, people developed different venues to keep themselves entertained.
