A man of history, community service
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[121]
[WAYITWAS-2002-121]
This is the story of a man many folks in Solano County know. I have always felt very fortunate that I was lucky enough to count myself among Bert Hughes' many friends.

Towns vanished when railroad passed them by
/
Bowen, Jerry
[25]
[WAYITWAS-2000-25]
I have always been fascinated by old maps and the potential stories they reveal. Working at the Solano County Archives is especially intriguing because of its numerous old maps. Many of you already know something about the towns that will be described in a series of articles to follow, but for newcomers to Solano County or its history, it won't hurt to get acquainted with the communities that once served travelers and '49ers in the later 1800s. My thanks to James Davis for a suggestion about the town of Cement, which became the catalyst of this series of articles.

Book aimed to lure Easterners with fruit tales
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[43]
[WAYITWAS-2000-43]
Are the people in New Orleans, St. Louis, Chicago, New York, Boston and elsewhere, who have paid a dollar a pound for California cherries in April, or who in 1887 ate nearly 2,000 carloads of California peaches, pears, plums, apricots and grapes, curious to know whence a good part of these fruits come, or to learn the manner of their growth and the appearance of the country?

Rhyme and reason behind early Solano poet
/
Bowen, Jerry
[544]
[WAYITWAS-2004-544]
I don't suppose that most newcomers to Vacaville have ever heard of Edwin Markham. Some may have heard of the poem, "Man With a Hoe," but don't know that a man who once lived in the now-contentious Lagoon Valley wrote it. So, let's look at a little history of Charles Edwin Anson Markham and some interesting contradictions.

[ECHOS-1999-435]
Today I am announcing my retirement from this column. It has been a source of great pleasure, and knowing there are many good stories yet to uncover, I feel some regret.

/
Bowen, Jerry
[577]
[WAYITWAS-2005-577]
In my last column I discussed the history of a corner of Solano County that few of today's citizens know about or visit, even though it is like time warping into the past.

Civil War-era Solano full of commotion
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[346]
[ECHOS-1997-346]
The New Year's news was about the "great Christmas fight" in Silveyville. A Suisun man, a "pure Union man," was visiting those parts when a drunk "Secesh Smith", also know as "Curly Headed Smith", started looking for a fight.

William Gordon Huff: the sculptor of Chief Solano
/
Dingler, Nancy
[490]
[RETROSPECT-2004-490]
Do you know who sculpted the statue of Chief Solano? This is one of those trivia questions that few can answer. If you came up with the name William Gordon Huff, you are correct. His name would most likely draw blank stares. William Gordon Huff was a celebrated sculptor who had a keen interest in California history. The 12-foot bronze statue is the one and only statue in California that memorializes one specific Native American.

Bert Hughes: historian, family man, community treasure
/
Dingler, Nancy
[475]
[RETROSPECT-2002-475]
This is going to be a very personal column today - a tribute to Bert Hughes, who recently passed away. Bertram Augustus Hughes was a true Renaissance man and will be greatly missed by local historians. If any one person could leave a deep void in the community, Bert's departure has done that.
