Currey found himself between squabblers

One of the prominent names among early Solano settlers is that of Judge John Currey. Currey brought his young family to Benicia in 1852, working as a lawyer on the disputes surrounding the Mexican land grants. After the Spanish missions had been dissolved in 1835, Mexican citizens received large land grants. The boundaries of these grants were loosely defined.

One name tied to early Solano County history is that of Judge John Currey. In our area, he made his name during the 1850s as a lawyer, working with many of the settlers in solving their legal issues surrounding the Mexican land grants and the ensuing settlement disputes.

The first two articles followed Henry Goosen in his endeavor of purchasing the Fairfield Water Works in 1902, relocating his hardware store from Cordelia to Fairfield in 1907, and the devastating fire that hit the 700 block of Texas Street on July 13, 1909.

After the total destruction of the Solano County Free Library in the fire of Dec. 8, 1929, months of work lay ahead for Librarian Clara Dills and her staff. The American Legion post in Suisun offered its hall as a temporary refuge. Despite the relocation, the library's phone number remained the same: Suisun 103.

Though he was born in Orange County, Va., on May 30, 1808, he grew up in Kentucky. Like many young frontier men, he felt the urge to move further west. The year 1830 found him as a farmer in New London, Miss., where he married Cornelia Catherine Lamme, a great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone, on Jan. 19, 1830.
