Visualize Vacaville Surrounded By Water?
/
Rico, John
[879]
[RICO-1981-879]
Beware, the flood is coming. At this point I am rather confused about our climatic transitions in the years ahead. One group of scientists and meteorologists tell us the North Pole ice masses are gradually creeping toward us and that in a million years, more or less, little Vacaville will be covered by glaciers measuring hundreds of feet deep.

[RICO-1981-878]
PLUS AND MINUS OF A BEDROOM COMMUNITY - Many times we hear Vacaville residents expressing themselves about the rapid growth here in immediate years past. Without going back too far, 31 years to be exact, residents in 1950 were well satisfied with the 3,169 people living here. Today that figures is around the 42,000 mark.

Go West, Young Man, and Grow Up With the Country - This bit of timely advice is credited to journalist Horace Greeley, but research actually attributes the saying to John Souls about 1851. Greeley used the quote in an article he wrote for the New York Tribune.

/
Rico, John
[870]
[RICO-1981-870]
Where has all that water disappeared to? Here is a reprint from an 1888 publication referring to the abundance of rainfall in the Vacaville district. In fact, there was an over-abundance, with the excess water causing root rot to the newly planted fruit trees.

/
Rico, John
[871]
[RICO-1981-871]
If someone mentioned to you that at one time in our past history there were as many as 1500 Chinese residing here, it would take you by surprise. But that's about the approximate number of orientals residing here, all of them ranch laborers, house servants and a few merchants.

Putt, Putt, Putt And The Reporter Was Printed
/
Rico, John
[872]
[RICO-1981-872]
Frequently people ask me if I find it frustrating in my endeavors to offer this column every week, which I have been doing for several decades. Frankly, at times it does bring me to the brink of total blankness in my attempts to go into a subject which can be of interest to local readers.

Rico, John
[873]
[RICO-1981-873]
I've got a suggestion to make. Let's change the name of the Vacaville Fire Department to Vacaville Emergency Services. I have my doubts about the council buying this suggestion, but it's something for them to think about.

Remembering the Good Old School Days
/
Rico, John
[876]
[RICO-1981-876]
School days, good old golden rule days. An estimated 9,000 Vacaville area elementary and high school students will go back to their classes next Tuesday. No one is able to predict whether registrations will be up or down. With home building here at a near stagnant position, there actually could be a decline in registrations for the fall semesters.
