Abstract: Much has been written about the wagon trains and the thousands who fell under the spell of the Gold Rush. But there were those that paved the way, so to speak, for the '49ers. One of the more notable early wagon trains was that of the Bidwell-Bartleson party. It can be said their journey marked the beginning of the settlement of the far West.
